When it’s this cold, why isn’t it snowing?

rongayle December 17th, 2008

Well, I am in Texas, after all, even if it is below freezing.

(Posted by Ron)

SleddingIt’s one of my least favorite times in Texas (or anywhere else for that matter.)  It’s winter.  It’s cold.  And it’s not even snowing.  Of course, if it was, I would sit inside and watch it.  After all, snow is cold, too!  Do you get the idea?  I like being where it’s warm and cozy even though I didn’t grow up that way.  The Earnest part of me enjoyed cold weather and snow.  I can remember coming inside after hours in the snow.  My clothes would be stiff with ice and I would still be laughing.  I wonder when I let that all change.

Anyway, this post is another guest post by Earnest D. Cember.  I like bringing him in whenever I feel my inner child stirring.  He seems to understand that feeling.  This post comes from his website and was posted in November.  Enjoy!

George Clooney or Andy Rooney?

rongayle December 8th, 2008

You decide.

(Guest post by Earnest D. Cember)

Earnest posted this blog several months ago.  As you will see, he’s a bit of an hillbilly savant and curmudgeon at the same time.  Maybe if I keep him around I can just let him get grumpier.  Then I won’t have to.  Here’s Earnest’s blog:

I think you’ve figured out by now that even though I have hillbilly in my blood I don’t like to see the English language butchered. Well, last night I actually said “I’m down with that.” That frightened me. Where did that come from? I don’t think I’ve never said it in my life until last night. As I become a “writer,” I’m also discovering a lot of “thats” in my writing.  What am I doing to the language? Continue Reading »

He’s Definitely Not From Chicago… is He?

rongayle December 3rd, 2008

Nope, but he is a December in the making (and not just because he was born in December!)

In the Beginning:

(Posted by Ron)

On a December morning in 1942 I was born in the little town of Kenova, WV.  I remember living in only two houses during my 18 years at home.  There was a third home, but we left that when I was about 3 years old.  It’s worth mentioning here that another little boy was born the same day, in Chicago, IL.  His name was Nelson Paul Luster and he was destined to live only three days.  His sister would be born 15 years later and comes into my story many years down the road.

Life was easy for me as I grew up. I didn’t have a lot of restrictions. They weren’t really necessary because life was a great deal safer for a child then than it is today. Within a few blocks of my home we had hills to climb, caves to “explore” and creeks in which to play. It wasn’t much farther to the town’s swimming pool and the two rivers that bordered the town. It was an exciting place for a little boy. Continue Reading »

Do You Remember Your First Sanitary Napkin?

Pour Ma Fem!

(Posted by Ron)

I do, and since I was a young, manly Navy man, I was embarrassed beyond belief.  No, I didn’t need it, but my first wife did.  I don’t remember how she convinced me to go alone to the store for them, but I did.  I also remember telling her I never wanted to do it again.

So tell me ladies.  How long was it before you could convince your partner to do such intimate shopping for you?  And you guys, have you done this for the woman you love?  If you have, have you done it more than once?  Some of you will say yes to both questions.  Many of you have successfully avoided having to make that purchase, regardless of how much you love her. American Eels as a Bonding Tool

Slipping and Sliding with Dad

(This is another guest post by my alter-ego, Earnest D. Cember.  It will also appear in Earnest’s blog.  It may seem out of place in our May December blog but it’s not.  Earnest shares his memories for his own enjoyment and, in this case, to relate how he and Earnestine May (Gayle’s alter ego) grew up so differently and in an almost totally different era.  As if our age difference isn’t enough to content with, we are the classic small town country boy and big city metropolitan girl combination. Here is Earnest’s blog.  Enjoy!  - Ron)

The American Eel is believed to come from an area of the Atlantic Ocean called the Sargasso Sea.  They are born there and then spend most of their life in fresh water.  They are energetic little fish which swim from the Atlantic ocean up many of the rivers and streams in America to mature in some interesting places.  This post is about those which found their way into the muddy banks of creeks in West Virginia.  That’s a pretty long swim.
