A peek inside our fairy tale….

(Posted by Gayle)

I feel a few posts coming on about romance, fairy tales, and soul mates. Yesterday in a very short span of time Ron and I were given some very interesting feedback about our marriage from two completely unrelated sources.

One friend told us were an “inspiration” to her.  To see us still together and “in love” after all these years gave her hope.

A blog reader read one of our lighter posts and commented that he enjoyed seeing our humor – it seemed romantic to him.

When I shared the last comment with Ron…. he….well…L(ed)OL – laughed out loud!So did I.  It’s quite funny in a very sweet way.  We don’t see ourselves as romantics. Survivors and adventures might be words we would use to describe us and our approach to marriage.

You see when I think of “romantics” fairy tales come to mind. Those always end with a magical kiss and the words “happily ever after.”  I’m also sure that a tidy bedroom filled with flowers, aromatherapy candles, netting over the bed, books of poetry, a supply of scented massage oils, the book The Joy of Sex, and drawer full of sexy lingerie must be part of the romantic’s boudoir.

If you wandered into our bedroom right now (it’s okay kids you can keep reading) here is what you would find:

  • an unmade bed with individual duvets. (No we don’t sleep entwined in each others arms.  Snoring, night sweats, my laptop, the dogs, and well… being exhausted have trumped those days.)
  • a giant dog crate with a blanket on it and miscellaneous junk laying on top.
  • a 4 foot pile of clothing waiting to go to the dry cleaners.
  • ron’s book piles (I try not to look.)  Of course I have a book pile, but that is so totally different!
  • several photos of us and many romantic trinkets we’ve acquired over the years including the rocks we exchanged in an impromptu marriage recommitment at a nature retreat.
  • a window unit air conditioner (yes we have central air, but remember those night sweats.)
  • a miscellaneous assortment of soft foam ear plugs (marriage savers I call them), chap-sticks, and my mouth guard (I’m a nighttime teeth clencher,  probably because of the snoring and night sweats!)
  • a small flat screen TV with DVD player and DVR box (poor “sleep hygiene” for sure.)
  • a pile of my shoes in a corner.
  • a video camera mounted in the corner (gottcha – just kidding!)
  • and I haven’t checked today but there are bound to be some dirty jockey shorts lurking somewhere along with tissues pulled out of the trash by Shorty.

So now that I’ve burst your bubble, please tune in as the week progresses. We’ve got more to say on the subject of romance, fairy tales, soul mates, and lasting relationships.

Psssst….(if you like it) Past it on….

There is way too much similarity to our room, namely the dog crate with stuff on top, unmade bed, and mouth guard!

Actually, Gayle forgot my mouthguard(s). Guaranteed by various TV commercials to stop my snoring. Now if I could just keep them in my mouth for more than an hour or so.

  • This internet site is really quite good, but for some reason it does not display properly when trying to view on my Nintendo Wii. If it helps, the console uses the Opera browser and am impelled to using the console for accessing the Net whilst my PC is away being restored.
