Susan Winter is co-author, with Felicia Brings, of Older Women, Younger Men : New Options for Love and Romance“. She is 48 and has been in a relationship with a man 20 years younger since 1992. Before that, she hooked up with two men 16 years younger and another 20 years younger.

She works out a lot by her own admission (and judging by her track record in this department) and often meets partners at the gym, not the bars.  Winter tells WebMD that she and her co-author interviewed more than 200 couples for their book. Though hardly a scientific study, the research surfaced three myths such couples hear every time:

How are we shaped?  Who are we and why?  The easy answers usually involve family, friends, churches, schools and the like.  As a parent I like to believe my kids are the adults they are today because of the values their mother and I instilled in them.  I’m sure my parents felt the same way.  What I’m finding is that some of the fine details of who I am have roots in unusually fertile spots not related to my parents.

What do a little black dog and I have in common?

There have been many pets in our lives but there is one that I am now watching as she ages. I see so much of what my aging is like as I watch her.  Her name is Betty. When I first saw her at the Humane Society I was immediately sure that she was the dog I wanted. She was one of a litter of puppies of a blond Cocker Spaniel mother. The folks at the Humane Society were sure her father was a Cocker Spaniel, too. I didn’t care. Yes, age gaps can be a problem…

…but like any other relationship problem this too can be managed.

When Gayle and I started out we didn’t think too much about the age difference. 15 years when you are in your 20s and 30s don’t seem like such a big deal. Of course there were lots of age related decisions we’ve had to make throughout our relationship and we’ll talk about some of those in future blogs. This one is about the fact that aging happens.
